Crypto currency market: Trump - Putin tension: Critical summit has begun
The world is waiting for the outcome of the Trump – Putin summit that began at 22:30 Turkey time. The summit, held in Alaska, which is quite close to the Russian border and located on US soil, could lead to a ceasefire in the Russia – Ukraine war, seen as the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II. While the markets are experiencing the anxiety of this meeting, significant get dumped were observed in cryptocurrencies before the summit. Bitcoin fell below 117k, while many altcoins experienced even deeper losses.
In a statement before the summit, Trump said, "I want to see a quick ceasefire. I want the deaths to stop. If this meeting does not go well, we may never meet again." The U.S. President also noted that Putin is a smart man, that they get along well, and that they have a respectful relationship, while reiterating the threat that a bad summit could have severe economic consequences for Russia.
It has been learned that the U.S. is assessing the possibility of using Russia's nuclear-powered icebreaker ships for the development of gas and LNG projects in Alaska, while a source close to the Kremlin speaking to Reuters stated that Putin is aware of Russia's economic fragility and the costs of the war, and therefore may be willing to make concessions regarding Ukraine. It is also mentioned that Putin could be willing to agree to halt the conflict along the front line in exchange for a legal guarantee that NATO will not expand eastward and for the lifting of certain Western sanctions.
On the other hand, Russia's Ambassador to the U.S., Alexander Darchiev, stated in an interview with the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti that he believes a positive outcome will emerge from the summit, but he does not expect it to be a turning point.
The meeting is expected to last 6-7 hours. If a positive result is achieved, a tripartite summit involving Zelensky may also be planned.
Bitcoin is trading at 117,150 dollars as of 23.15.
