Precautions and contraindications for lychee consumption

Dietary Restrictions for Special Populations
- Children and the elderly: Children and the elderly have weaker digestive functions, and the high fructose content in lychee may increase the burden on the digestive system, leading to indigestion or diarrhea; children are also prone to "lychee disease" due to their underdeveloped blood sugar regulation, which can cause symptoms of hypoglycemia such as dizziness and fatigue.
- Individuals with sensitive stomachs: The fructose and fiber in lychee may cause symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, so it is necessary to limit intake or avoid consumption.
- Allergic individuals: May experience allergic reactions such as skin redness, itching, swelling, or even difficulty breathing. It is recommended that those allergic to other fruits consult a doctor before consumption.
- Chronic disease patients: Diabetic patients need to strictly control lychee intake, as its sugar content is as high as 16%-20%, which can lead to a sharp increase in blood sugar; patients with kidney diseases and gastrointestinal diseases should also avoid excessive consumption.
- For individuals with cold constitution and hot constitution: Lychee is temperate (some sources mention "cold nature", but here we follow the majority of sources stating "temperate"). Those with a cold constitution may experience aggravated symptoms such as cold hands and feet, abdominal pain, etc., when consuming it in excess; while those with a hot constitution may easily get heat symptoms, leading to issues such as sore throat and mouth ulcers.

Dietary Taboo
1. Avoid eating on an empty stomach: When your stomach is empty, the stomach wall is easily stimulated by high sugar content, which can cause abdominal pain and bloating, and may also lead to "hyperosmolar coma" due to the rapid consumption of sugar.
2. Excessive consumption is prohibited: Adults are advised not to exceed 300 grams per day (approximately 10-15 pieces). Overconsumption can stimulate excessive insulin secretion, leading to a delayed conversion of fructose to glucose, resulting in hypoglycemia (lychee disease). In severe cases, it can lead to coma, convulsions, and respiratory failure.
3. Do not eat unripe or soaked lychees: Unripe lychees may contain harmful substances, and soaked lychees are prone to bacterial growth, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort.

The harm and prevention of lychee disease
- Symptoms: Moderate symptoms include drowsiness, lethargy, and limb convulsions; severe cases may present with coma, tonic-clonic seizures, and shock, requiring immediate medical attention.
- High-risk groups: children, hypoglycemic patients, diabetes patients, pregnant women with gestational diabetes, and others with poor blood sugar regulation.
- Precautions: Control the amount consumed, avoid eating on an empty stomach, choose ripe lychees, and if discomfort occurs after consumption, promptly replenish with glucose water and seek medical attention.

Precautions for Taboo Content
- Explanation of information disparity: There is a dispute regarding the "cooling" or "warming" nature of lychee. Based on the majority of information and descriptions of "excess heat" symptoms, it is recommended that individuals with sensitive constitutions adjust their consumption based on their own reactions.
- Special disease notice: Patients with liver disease, acute inflammation, or the common cold should be cautious when consuming lychee as it may worsen their condition.
