Robinhood has just announced the "Robinhood Chain" Layer-2 blockchain running on Arbitrum Orbit to enable 24/7 trading of tokenized stocks with near-instant settlement times. Instead of buying and selling on the NYSE, real stocks will be "wrapped" into onchain tokens, operated by Robinhood, which will collect all transaction fees.
Galaxy Digital warns that this move could gradually withdraw liquidity from traditional centralized exchanges, diminishing the revenue from trading fees and data that is the backbone of the NYSE. If traditional exchanges do not keep up with this feature, they will increasingly become a "storage place" for a less useful version of the same stock.
